The most common question we get from Gold Coast pool owners: should I use epoxy or acrylic? Short answer: epoxy, almost always. Here’s why.
Quick Comparison
| Factor | Epoxy | Acrylic |
|---|---|---|
| Lifespan | 5–10 years | 2–4 years |
| Surface prep required | Thorough (acid wash) | Moderate |
| UV & chemical resistance | Excellent | Moderate |
| Adhesion type | Chemical bond | Mechanical bond |
| Upfront cost | Higher | Lower |
| Cost per year of service | Lower | Higher |
What Is Epoxy Pool Paint?
Epoxy pool paint is a two-part system that creates a hard, chemically bonded coating on the pool surface. Unlike acrylic paint which sits on top of the surface, epoxy bonds at a molecular level — making it far more resistant to water, UV, pool chemicals and physical wear.
In Australia, LuxaPool epoxy is the most widely specified product. It’s what we use on every concrete and marblesheen pool we resurface on the Gold Coast.
What Is Acrylic Pool Paint?
Acrylic pool paint is a water-based product that’s easier to apply and has lower upfront material costs. It doesn’t require as thorough a surface preparation as epoxy.
The tradeoff: acrylic typically lasts 2–4 years before needing another coat. On the Gold Coast, where pools are exposed to intense UV and high chlorine loads, acrylic often wears faster than the manufacturer’s estimate.
Why We Always Recommend Epoxy on the Gold Coast
- Queensland UV: Gold Coast pools receive extreme UV year-round. Epoxy’s UV-stable chemistry holds up far better than acrylic.
- Longer recoating cycles: Less disruption. You’re not draining and repainting every 2 years.
- Better long-term value: Epoxy costs more upfront but costs less per year of service life.
- Stronger adhesion: Properly applied epoxy is less likely to peel, bubble or flake.
When Might Acrylic Be the Right Choice?
Acrylic is sometimes the right choice when:
- The pool currently has acrylic on it — applying epoxy over acrylic requires full removal of the existing paint first, which adds cost
- Budget is the primary constraint and the pool just needs a short-term refresh
- The pool is being sold in the near future and the owner just needs it to look presentable
In most cases though, we recommend committing to epoxy for the long-term benefit.
Can You Apply Epoxy Over Acrylic?
Not directly. Epoxy cannot bond properly over acrylic paint. If your pool currently has acrylic on it, the existing paint needs to be fully stripped back to the bare surface before epoxy can be applied. This adds cost to the job but results in a superior and longer-lasting finish.
