Why Epoxy Pool Paint Is the Best Choice

Epoxy pool paint forms a hard, chemically bonded surface layer rather than simply sitting on top of the existing coat the way acrylic paint does. This means it's significantly more resistant to UV, pool chemicals, and physical abrasion β€” and it lasts far longer.

Our LuxaPool epoxy system is Australia's most widely specified pool paint product, used by professional applicators across Queensland. When applied over a properly prepared surface, it delivers a finish that lasts 5–10 years depending on the number of coats.

Epoxy vs Acrylic Pool Paint β€” Which Lasts Longer?

Acrylic pool paint is water-based and easy to apply, but it typically needs recoating every 2–4 years. Epoxy requires more thorough surface preparation but bonds at a molecular level, lasting 2–3 times longer. For Gold Coast pools exposed to intense UV and high chemical loads, epoxy is the clear winner.

  • Acrylic: 2–4 year lifespan, easier prep, lower upfront cost
  • Epoxy: 5–10 year lifespan, thorough prep required, far better long-term value

We exclusively use LuxaPool epoxy because we believe in giving our customers the longest-lasting result possible. See our full comparison: Epoxy vs Acrylic Pool Paint.

LuxaPool Epoxy Systems We Apply

  • 2-Coat System: Primer coat + 2 full epoxy coats. Lasts 5–7 years. Best for pools in good structural condition needing a refresh.
  • 3-Coat System: Primer + 3 epoxy coats with additional depth and density. Lasts 8–10 years. Best for pools that need maximum longevity or have previously been heavily painted.

Our Epoxy Application Process

  • Free site quote: We inspect the pool surface, identify any issues and quote honestly upfront.
  • Drain & pressure wash: Full drain and high-pressure wash to remove algae, scale and old paint debris.
  • Acid wash & surface prep: Opens the surface pores for maximum epoxy adhesion.
  • Crack repair: All cracks sealed and repaired before any coating is applied.
  • Epoxy application: Each coat applied by roller or airless spray and fully cured before the next coat.
  • Final inspection: We check coverage, adhesion and finish quality before sign-off.

Epoxy Pool Paint
Questions.
How many coats of LuxaPool epoxy do I need?

Most pools on the Gold Coast benefit from a 3-coat system for maximum durability. A 2-coat system is suitable for pools in good condition that just need a colour refresh. We assess each pool individually and recommend the right system for your situation.

Can you paint over existing pool paint?

It depends on what's currently on the pool. Epoxy can be applied over existing epoxy with proper prep. Painting over acrylic or rubber-based paint with epoxy requires full removal of the existing paint first. We assess this during the free quote visit.

How long before I can refill after epoxy painting?

LuxaPool epoxy requires a full 7-day cure period after the final coat before the pool can be refilled. We'll give you exact timing on the day β€” it can vary depending on temperature and humidity.

Can you resurface a fibreglass pool with epoxy?

Fibreglass pools require a specialist coating rather than standard LuxaPool epoxy. We do offer fibreglass pool resurfacing β€” contact us for a quote specific to your fibreglass pool.
